Africa: Usaid finances 9 companies to electrify clinics
On the African continent, 9 companies specializing in the supply of off-grid solar systems have been selected by the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid) to receive a grant of $ 2.6 million. This funding allocated under the Power Africa initiative will be used to electrify health centers in nine countries via the solar off-grid.
The Covid-19 has exposed the flaws in the health systems of all countries around the world. One of the challenges for hospitals in Africa is access to electricity. It is to help address this issue that the Power Africa initiative is focusing on health care facilities.
As part of this electrification initiative launched by former United States President Barack Obama, the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid) has chosen nine solar off-grid providers to receive a grant of 2, $ 6 million.
Businesses in nine African countries will use this funding to supply electricity to health care facilities. This is the case of OffGridBox which was chosen to supply electricity through its containerized solution in six rural clinics in Rwanda. The company will implement a pay-as-you-go (Paygo) business model, selling electricity and drinking water to surrounding communities.
“Through these grants, Usaid is investing in a set of pilot projects that demonstrate how electrification of health centers can be delivered in a commercially sustainable manner, with strong private sector participation,” says David Stonehill, Head of Health Center. Power Africa's “Beyond the Grid” initiative. The initiative is expected to increase the rate of access to electricity for health care facilities on the African continent.
According to Usaid, 60% of clinics in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to electricity, and of those who do, only 34% of hospitals and 28% of clinics have reliable 24-hour access.
