Salif Kaboré, Directeur Général de la SONABEL affirme : « avec la mise en service de la ligne Ouagadougou - Bobo-Dioulasso, nous allons disposer de 86 mégawatts importés de la Côte d’Ivoire. Cela devrait nous permettre de satisfaire la demande sur le moyen terme, c’est-à-dire jusqu’en 2013-2014 ».

L’objectif était d’amener sur 338 kilomètres, depuis Kodeni à Bobo- Dioulasso jusqu’à Zagtouli à l’entrée de Ouagadougou, une partie de l’électricité importée de Côte d’Ivoire, ce qui nécessitait, entre autres, la construction de 704 pylônes.

Le programme comprend également un volet électrification rurale consistant à électrifier cinq localités le long de la ligne que sont Koumbia, Pâ, Bagassi, Sabou et Kokologho avec, en outre, un dispositif permettant d’électrifier les localités autour de Pâ.

Quant à l’électrification des zones frontalières aux deux pays, les gouvernements burkinabé et ivoirien ont décidé de constituer une équipe conjointe de prospection. Les projets identifiés seront soumis à diverses institutions de financement et en particulier à la Facilité Energie de l’Union Européenne.

Le coût initial du projet d’interconnexion avec la Côte d’Ivoire est de 49 milliards de francs CFA (104.666.000 dollars) financés par l’AFD, le crédit mixte danois, la BEI, le fonds nordique NDF, la Banque Mondiale, l’Etat burkinabè et la Sonabel.

Parmi les projets d’envergure à venir, figurent le projet thermique avec la centrale de Komsilga et l’interconnexion électrique avec le Ghana.
